Book of Life

Step One: Take out your lab book and date this entry. In your book or in a separate document write your life story out in the third person, using a name other than your own. It may help to break it out into chapters that are chunks of time; for example, “Birth to Five Years,” “Ages Five to Ten,” and so on. Focus on just the facts told in as objective a way as possible.

Step Two: Find an undisturbed time and place to read this story aloud to yourself. This time notice what emotions come up for you as you read. If a particular feeling emerges, stop reading and focus on your emotional experience. Enter into it as deeply as you wish for as long as you wish, locate it in your body, then continue reading aloud.
